Speedo Shyness

Okay everyone knows that in America, people are all shy about Speedos, in other countries nothing thinks anything of it.

Lately I've been going swimming at the Gym, I am not a very good swimmer, but am gonna get good by the end of the year. The only problem is I am extremely shy of appearing gay, even though I am, so I wear board shorts. Even though I like wearing speedos.

Is anyone hear str8 and wears speedos? or gay and completely comfortable with wearing speedos at the gym?

New Swimsuit breaking all records

Speedo has just invented the new LZR swimsuits and records are being broken almost everyday in all types of swim meets.
See here:
http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/speedo-lzr-swim-suit-olympics
They look so modern and at a mere $900.00 you bet that every professional and non-professional athlete will be able to afford this new technology.
Many criticize this new suit as not being fair, but athletes argue it should be allowed and not classified as illegal such as hormones and steroids.
BTW it is extemely s*xy too and brings out the beauty of the human form....Can't wait to see Phelps and others in these at the Olympics.

I have developed achilles tendinitis. Any suggestions on how I can still get my swimming in without reinjuring my ankle? Last night I went swimming and used the wedge between my legs and swam freestyle without using my legs. But there has to be other options as well. Any ideas?

I'm trying to find a suit that fits! I don't MUCH care about the cut...or the style/color, etc. But I have a long torso(I'm 6 ft tall), and I wear a size 40 suit. Got any suggestions? I'm working on slimming down, so I don't want to spend an arm and a leg(under 50 bucks?) on a suit that won't fit me for very long. Help!

Question about distance workouts

Is anyone familiar with a series of workouts that developed in the mid-90's called "Russians"? These were workouts geared towards distance swimmers and took place over the course of a season. During one workout, the swimmer would get a base time--I can't remember exactly how--then in subsequent workouts, this base time was used to swim as many 200's as one could while making the base interval. The idea was to swim more and more 200's within the interval each time one swam the second workout, then after a time to go back to the first workout and set a new base time to swim another series of 200's.

Does anyone know: 1) how to determine the base time in the first workout; 2) how many 200's one swims before going back to set a new base time?

So I think I've plateaued in my swimming. I need to switch it up to get a good workout again but don't really know how. I've tried alternating the moves I do, changing the routine, going longer, going faster, etc...any other suggestions? Should I result to stop swimming for a week and just work out in the gym then go back to swimming? Any recommendations would be fabulous!

Any tips/tricks for swimming in it to get the most out of the added buoyancy and any tips on how to get out of it as fast as possible (I know to use the body glide before getting into it). Thanks!!

I know that the Speedo store is only online now, but I've seen their selection and it's not great. No luck at Big 5 either.

I found a calculator online that tells you how many calories you burn swimming. You have the choice of vigorous, moderate or light. I'm having a hard time figuring out if I swim "moderately" or "vigorously". I swim about 50 laps in 35-40 minutes. (72 laps is a mile at my pool.) What do you think that would be categorized as?

5x100 free moderate :15 rest
6x50 butterfly/free (25/25) :15 rest
4x100 IM :15 rest
8x50 IM order :45
4x50 free fast :40
300 free easy

3300 yds total a little under an hour depending on rests between sets.

chelating or breaking chlorine bond on hair/skin?

any good products out there that work by removing or neutralizing the chemicals rather then masking with a perfumy smell?
i found a swimmer's shampoo in a drugstore but it stinks and i'm suspecting it is only masking.
i'm at the pool again every second day and will be till summer months when i can swim outdoors.
i already know about the cap and the condtioner.

thanks! :-)

I do laps at a pool that uses bromine rather than Chlorine. It's supposed to be gentler to skin/hair (I occasionally don't wear a cap), but I find it rough at time. Does anyone have experience with this? any recommendation on products?

I have a friend with skin issues - she thinks she may have a chlorine allergy. Has anyone here dealt with that?

Do you put something on your skin before you get into the pool?

What have you found that helps?

Thanks in advance.

I like swimming in cold refreshing water. I've dipped in Bass Lake, Anza Lake, Ocean Beach and Pacifica. Any other suggestions?
I need people to do it with, anyone else out there into cold water dips?
Or perhaps organizing full moon swims...

Breaststrokers?

hey, so i suck at breaststroke so bad!!. it's embarassing almost.

i'm a fly/backstroker, and my free style is pretty decent. But in the breast stroke leg of an IM, i just about embarass myself, and completely loose it.

any helpful advice from those quick breaststrokers out there would be really nice to hear.

I want to hear about little quirks or excercises that helped you increae your speed, or get a feel for the water or help your rhythm, during that stroke.

for instance, i've tried pullbreath...kickglide but it still feels really awkward when i swim it, and i feel like i'm not moving very quickly.

passing when circle swimming?

How do you pass (or get passed) while circle swimming? I've got a triathlon this weekend, and we'll be circle swimming 3 to a lane. The rules say if your foot is tapped, to let the person pass you at the wall. Does this mean I would stop swimming and hang out by the lane marker, or can I just slow down and let them overtake me?

Although I can rationalize it until the cows come home, I still freak a little swimming in the open ocean on my own.

Hi there! My husband and I are relatively new (and pretty bad) swimmers, so we're practicing a lot!

He gets a major runny nose after he's been in the pool, it can last for days. Does anybody else have this problem? Where does it come from? What can you do about it?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

Adult beginner lessons in Oakland or Berkeley?

Hi,

This is my first time posting here. I swim only semi-regularly and have joined Masters Swimming in Alameda with Linda Gilcrest in the past. Now, I live in San Francisco and swim at Rossi.

I have a friend who is actively seeking to learn how to swim to get over her fear of water. Does anyone know good instructors for adult beginner lessons in either Oakland or Berkeley?

Thanks ahead of time!

I've been swimming as part of my training for a triathlon, but it's strting to affect my hair. Any tips (besides buying expensive shampoos) on keeping my hair from drying out?

I wet my hair first and put on a swim cap. In real life, I probably shower every 2-3 days, so it may just be the daily shampooing that is getting to me.

Thanks!

Hey everyone,

I wanted to ask the group about a back issue I have that develops when I swim. I get this pain somewhere on the left side of my right should blade. I attribute it to my body dropping more on that side when I pull on my crawl. I used to be really bad and dropped a lot on that side of the body because I breathe on the left-hand side.

I've learned to breathe on both sides now and I've learned to roll a lot better so that I'm pulling more and not dropping as much. However, it still is work and when I'm tired, I think I still drop more than I realize. I think I can fix this problem by improving my technique. So my question is, Does anyone know any drills that will help me roll my hips better in the water and not drop as much? Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't have a trainer for swimming and recently picked this book up. I have learned more by reading this book than anything online. It's great! They also have a DVD which I heard was better - and of course easier to follow instructions.

The book gets into tons of detail with stories and other explanations that are helpful. I'd like to breeze through then get the DVD for visual confirmations.

This book comes highly recommended by the folks at www.beginnertriathlete.com. An excellent resource for triathletes!

For me, it's backstroke.

I don't know why I struggle with it. I FEEL like I'm doing it correctly, but, I can also feel how slow I am and can see the swimmers behind me catching up quickly.

When I'm swimming backstroke, I feel as if I'm caught in one of those nightmares where you're running from a bad guy and you're running running running as fast as you can, but he is s l o w l y walking and STILL catching up to you!

I swim at the Temescal pool regularly. It's a pretty good pool--clean, well-maintained, nice people, etc. Where do you swim at? If you are a Temescal swimmer too, greet me here and maybe we can meet up for a swim together! Well, we'd swim separately, but together, if that makes any sense...

I tend to start mine earlier than the New Year so since about the middle of November I have been slowly making my way back into the water. I had forgotten how calming swimming can be (and tiring!)

Swim Team worries

Well, I just moved back to the city and I'm finding myself in need of a new swim team. I checked out the presidio YMCA team and it seems like a joke. They don't even compete! And, they make you join the Y inorder to swim. I just want to swim.

The USF team seems like it's more what I want in that they go to meets and they do open water swims but they make you try out and it seems like the coach is pretty hardcore. The try out is no problem because I've swam competitively since I was 10 (with a 4 year hiatus while in college) but I'm worried about the whole hardcore aspect. I just want to swim with a team and do open water swims without the pressure of making practice every day and "bettering my times". I'm more interested in competing for my sake and not anyone elses (can you tell I had a lot of pressure as a teen-age swimmer? anyone from the bay area? CCS ring a bell? damn that 500 free time!).

And, the last part of my dilemma is that I'm technically not supposed to swim due to the rotators cuff injury I had when I was 13 (take my advice, if you hurt your shoulder, see a dr. immediately and get it taken care of!). They're both all messed up and my Dr. told me to not swim anymore because they're just going to keep getting inflammed and messed up and more scar tissue blah blah blah.

So, the end question is, anyone have any experience with these teams? Anyone have any other ideas for masters swim teams in SF?

1. I didn't drown.

2. I didn't humiliate myself.

3. It was SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!!!

I told you I was slow - it took me 32:57 to do the mile (it took the winning team the same amount of time to do BOTH miles, haha!) - but I also wasn't the slowest - we came in 12th out of 17 in our age division.

The only regret I have is that I didn't warm up. But, before the race, I was imagining myself standing on the beach, waiting for my partner to complete her mile, cold and wet and shivering and miserable. Next time, I'll take cold and wet over completely not warmed up!

If I wasn't madly in love with swimming enough BEFORE this race, I'm gaga over it now!

It's funny, I used to feel more at home in the water than on land, but since high school, I've never found a place I really loved to swim. I need to find a pool that I can somehow either have to myself completely, or feel free in. Also, there's nowhere I feel like I can do handstands...

Anybody have good places they like to swim in the SF bay area?

I also miss natural swimming, rivers, lakes, etc.

Hi all my fellow speedo-tan sporting folk. I thought I would join even though most of the time I feel like I hate swimming. I started swimming competitively at age 10, hit my peak at 13, swam through high school, quit during college and now I'm back. I love it more now than I ever did and I suspect that I'm swimming for my own enjoyment now and not to make certain times for certain events (or spending all my weekends at events).

I'm a long distance swimmer and I swam the Trans Tahoe Relay in July. It was awesome!

Anyone do a lot of Ocean swimming? I've got a triathlon coming up and I'm terrified of swimming in the ocean!

Typical workout?

I usually do a 500 yd warmup, front crawl
then some combination of sprints, intervals, and distance swims.
I've been doing some hypoxic breathing drills, which always start easy and end very, very difficult.
Then I end with a 100 yd "whatever" stroke cool down.
Most workouts are in the 2000 - 2500 yard range, unless I'm pressed for time, then I only do 1000.

Anyone got suggestions for good technique/speed drills?

I absolutely love doing pull swims. I love to sprint that way.
