Are using flippers when swimming a better work out? Or is it cheating?

Better workout for your legs. Helps your form. However, it is not an accurate reflection of what it feels like to swim without them, especially in open water. But they are good as a training tool, just like a kick board or pull buoy.

I would get zoomers which are a smaller, very firm version of the flipper. A lot of experienced swimmers use them to complement their workouts including their kicking or when they want to do a fast set. The traditional flippers are really too big for the pool unless you're doing scuba training.

Fins give your legs a better workout, and finswimming is great aerobic exerise. Fins have two qualities: thrust, and blade flexing. Generally speaking, the stiffer the blade, the greater the thrust and the less the blade flexing. Blade flexing is very important if one is dolphin kicking or swimming butterfly stroke. For more info, check out the "Finswimming" Tribe. There you will find info and pix about monofins and bi-fins.
