vigorous or moderate?

I found a calculator online that tells you how many calories you burn swimming. You have the choice of vigorous, moderate or light. I'm having a hard time figuring out if I swim "moderately" or "vigorously". I swim about 50 laps in 35-40 minutes. (72 laps is a mile at my pool.) What do you think that would be categorized as?

50 laps or lengths? Is this a small pool or big?

at my gym,1650m (a mile) would be 33 laps (one lap being one round trip back and forth across the pool). 33 laps would probably take me up to 40 minutes. I'm not a fast swimmer, I'm doing more endurance than speed training, so I would call that moderate. Endurance training is probably in the middle of the scale.

When I'm race training (doing sprint swims, short distance) I would call that vigorous. But again - my ability will be different from yours, or that other fish guy in the lane next to me.

If you're a good swimmer, you're more efficient, and therefore faster, and possibly not working as hard as me.

so - what's your heart rate like when you're swimming? What zone would you say your heartrate is in?

My pool is 25-yards according to their website. I guess I swim 50 lengths. (I count one way as 1 lap and then back is another lap...)

I think this is best determined by your perceived exertion.

Do you stop after every length?

        Are you out of breath?

How many breaks do you need when you do this?

No I don't stop and rest. I can do at least 15-25 lengths without stopping and then sometimes I do stop for a minute. Sometimes I'm out of breath. It depends on what time of day I'm swimming... I usually only break once or twice while doing it. Usually to just adjust my swimming cap. :)

    so, a 25 yd pool...

    1 mile = 1760 yards
= 70.4 lengths of the pool
    = 35.2 laps

If we were working with a 25 meter pool,
    1 mile = 1609m
    = about 64 lengths
    = about 32 laps
