Okay everyone knows that in America, people are all shy about Speedos, in other countries nothing thinks anything of it.
Lately I've been going swimming at the Gym, I am not a very good swimmer, but am gonna get good by the end of the year. The only problem is I am extremely shy of appearing gay, even though I am, so I wear board shorts. Even though I like wearing speedos.
Is anyone hear str8 and wears speedos? or gay and completely comfortable with wearing speedos at the gym?

Re: Speedo Shyness
Thu, August 16, 2007 - 8:30 AMwow, I think you're thinking too much. But maybe that is because I live in SF and see lots of different kinds of bathing suits. And I'm not a gay man.
My brother also lives here in SF, is straight, and when he swims at one of the city pools, he wears a speedo. He has told me though, that he feels silly wearing a speedo at the beach (because it's not like your'e swimming laps and trying to reduce drag or anything). So his concern about speedo or board shorts has nothing to do with appearing gay, but has to do with the purpose of the suit. Or maybe looking exhibitionistic at the beach?
In Europe, don't they wear speedos on the beach? I mean, IF they are wearing suits?
Phoenix is a world away from SF I guess. What are other people wearing? -

Re: Speedo Shyness
Thu, August 16, 2007 - 11:05 AMI wear what i call "mandex." They are like a mix of speedos and boardshorts. The same material and tightness of speedos, but the length of
boardshorts.

Thu, August 16, 2007 - 4:38 PMAnn here people wear boardshorts I guess I could try the knee type but I hate how they look, they make me look too much like a pro which I am not -

Re: Speedo Shyness
Fri, August 17, 2007 - 8:56 AMthere's something to be said for "dressing for success" though, Abe. I feel like I try (and do) bike faster when I'm in spandex than when I'm wearing normal street clothes. If you wear a suit that makes you look like a pro (which is NOT a bad look to have!), you'll probably push yourself harder to swim like a pro.

Re: Speedo Shyness
Tue, January 8, 2008 - 2:06 PMI'm straight and from Australia, but live in London. I swim a lot for fitness. I swim with a masters squad and often on my own.
I can't comment specifically about the States and the attitude towards Speedos, but where I come from, if you are doing laps for fitness and you aren't wearing speedos, then people think you're a bit of an idiot for clunking up and down in board shorts.
Speedos are associated with serious swimming. Ok, on the beach it is a bit different. However, if you are in a pool and swimming laps, then I don't think anyone will think strangely of you for wearing speedos.
This issue is not about what you wear but how you wear it. Get your speedos on, get straight in the pool, and swim like you are focused on being a good swimmer. No-one will even look twice at you or what you are wearing. However, if you spend all your time parading up and down the the pool decking chatting to friends, then you won't look like a serious swimmer.
It's about swimming, not speedos. -

Re: Speedo Shyness
Tue, January 8, 2008 - 7:52 PMI have to agree with lain here. I wear speedos at the gym and no one looks twice because I'm swimming and not socializing/modeling. You're there to workout and any decent gym should be filled with like minded people. -

Re: Speedo Shyness
Wed, January 9, 2008 - 12:25 PMI used to work out at Gold's Gym in SF and that place is quite the gay men's gym and yes, people are very concerned about what they work out in (no pool there though, so I guess I'm getting a little off topic). I've recently been going to South End Rowing Club's gym and people there really ARE working out -- IN THE GYM -- IN THEIR BATHING SUITS!!!
It ain't purty, but they ARE there to work out and after they do their stint in the gym, they're going to go for a swim, so why not? Saves on laundry I guess!!
(so far, I've only seen older men doing this. No bikini-clad women working out in the gym. YET.)

Re: Speedo Shyness
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 8:32 PMI'd agree (as a -mostly- straight woman, who has been swimming competitively on and off for the last 20 years or so, the only thing I would think of a guy in speedos is that he must be someone serious about swimming.
Maybe wear the "short short" style instead of the brief style....if it makes you feel better, but I wouldn't stress about it. Hop in! -

Re: Speedo Shyness
Fri, August 15, 2008 - 12:09 AMyou can also figure in the fact wearing trunks or board shorts creates drag, which is great for training cuz then when you switch you are moving.
But I throw a t-shirt on every once in awhile to mix it up as well....
